Beginning with a full redesign, the updated app launched on iOS, and for the first time on Android. A dual design-system was created to maintain design patterns and UI behavior native to each platform.
The next several years were spent ideating, designing, testing, and launching new features to the app, including streaming music integration, social photo sharing, and a customizable coaching program.
PICS OR IT DIDN’T HAPPEN
As Instagram became a social network in its own right, people started sharing more than photography. Screenshots from fitness apps were common, celebrating personal achievements like breaking a PR, or participation in group events like marathons.
Seeing an opportunity to meet runners where they were, we added a photo sharing feature to the app, with a twist (or rotation, more accurately).
Before Instagram allowed multiple images per post, people were already beginning to use collage apps share several photos from their runs. I created some multi-image layouts based on the angle of the Swoosh, to make photos shared from the app recognizable at a glance.
